Course Profile: Fire Safety - Refresher (Half Day)
This half day course is designed for people, in a social care setting, who have attended a full day of training in Fire Safety and need their knowledge updated. Based on legal requirements the course is practical*, interactive and surprisingly lively. The course is set in the context of the Care Act (2014), supports the Social Care Commitment and will help organisations meet the CQC Fundamental Standards. It will reflect the organisation’s related Health & Safety policy and can be adapted to be held in a work situation so that participants may gain maximum benefit from the session.

The course is designed for Health Care, Support workers and others who have not trained in the subject or require a refresher.

Learning outcomes

  • Why ensuring Fire Safety is such essential part of work practice
  • The properties of fire
  • The main requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • Everyone’s responsibility in fire prevention    
  • The roles & responsibilities of staff for fire prevention within the organisation
  • How people behave in a fire situation
  • What is expected of workers when responding to a fire situation within their workplace
  • The safe way to respond to a fire situation
  • Identifying the components of a fire risk assessment:
  •                 -sources of ignition
                    -sources of combustible material
                    -identification of people at risk
  • Safe evacuation of the workplace
  • Suitable prevention measures to reduce the likelihood of fire 
  • How the knowledge of the properties of fire can be applied when tackling a fire safely 
  • What fire fighting equipment is and should be available
  • The principles of extinguishing a fire
  • How to use a fire blanket
  • How to record appropriately
  • What is required to maintain fire equipment
* A practical exercise demonstrating the use of fire extinguishers is not included in this course.
Training methods utilised include: Discussion, Overheads/Presentation, Small & large group work, Video, Handouts, Practical exercise
