Course Profile: Dementia & Learning Disabilities (1-2 Days)
This course aims to help workers understand the complexity of the combination of Dementia and Learning Disabilities. Through their increased understanding of the difficulties experienced by people with this dual diagnosis and a range of possible support interventions and approaches, it is envisaged that workers and helpers will promote and maintain skills, awareness, confidence, self esteem, independence and a quality of life for the person for as long as possible.
The course is informed by The National Dementia Strategy and guidance from the Downs Syndrome Association, AGE UK & FPLD. The course is set in the context of the Care Act (2014), supports the Social Care Commitment and will help organisations meet the CQC Fundamental Standards. It links with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (Skills for Care and Skills for Health, 2013)

Care certificate: 5, 7, 9, 13.2
The course is designed for health & support workers in services for people with learning disabilities in a variety of settings; residential, Home care, day support etc.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners should understand:

  • The connection between the two: Diagnosis, Statistics, Causation, Prognosis, Onset etc.
  • What is Dementia, the signs & symptoms and progressive stages; Alzheimer’s in particular
  • The complexity of dual diagnosis
  • How the condition impacts on the individual and those connected with them; the challenges, including communication
  • The risk factors
  • The need to regard each person as an individual and to provide individualised support/care
  • What we mean by a ‘Person Centred’ approach and other approaches
  • The challenges of PCP and the need for a pragmatic approach
  • How to ensure that support offered is done with Dignity & Respect
  • The need for drawing on the best resources. We can’t know and do everything!         
  • The different professional and support roles and how to engage with them
  • How to plan for care and provide day to day support/care
  • How the MCA applies to support/care planning
  • Current Good Practice & Guidelines
  • The need to constantly review and update in response to fluctuating capacity
  • Bringing the team and others ‘on board’
Training methods utilised include: Presentations, Role-play, Trust exercises, Word-storming, Feedback, Discussion, Tutor presentations, PowerPoint, Group work, Handouts
