Course Profile: Childhood Sexual Exploitation

This course has been designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding children at risk of sexual exploitation and how adults in a caring role can understand and react. The course will provide parents, carers and staff with a clear understanding of the dysfunctional cycles that lead to this behaviour and the psychological and bio-medical elements that impact on it. For participants, it will also increase confidence and knowledge to facilitate much more effective and holistic risk management and support.

The course aims to demystify what can be considered a complex process and provide staff with the confidence to manage issues of sexual exploitation and be clear on what action is required to manage risk effectively in a holistic, child-centred fashion.

The course is designed for Foster carers, childcare workers, residential support workers, social workers, teachers and teaching assistants and anyone working with children and young people
Learning outcomes

  • How to respond to and report suspected or alleged abuse
  • Different models of this behaviour
  • How to use person-centred practice to help manage this behaviour
  • How to assist young people to develop resilience to this behaviour
  • How to help improve young people’s protective behaviours
  • Working with young people who have been victims of CSE
  • How to develop safer caring strategies for young people at risk of CSE
  • How to incorporate good sex education into working with young people
  • Gang-related issues regarding young people at risk of CSE
  • How young people are trafficked and transported across countries and borders
Training methods utilised include: Presentations, Games, Activity sheets, Feedback, Discussion, Tutor presentations, PowerPoint, Group work, DVD and Handouts
