Course Profile: Anger Management (1 Day)

This course is designed for professionals working with young people who display angry behaviours, who ‘act out’ and have difficulties in finding a verbal language for their emotional experience.  Participants can expect to build on skills and strategies in managing young people’s anger and high arousal states, including anxiety, and understand how a safe and containing experience of a ‘secure attachment figure’ can minimise the need to use behaviour to express emotions.  The course is grounded in Attachment and Trauma Theory, with reference to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Behaviour Modification techniques.

The course is designed forprofessionals working with challenging and disruptive young people who have difficulties expressing their anger appropriately and safely.  The course should assist the organisation to meet CQC outcome 4, 7.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners should understand:

  • How cognitive functioning is affected by high arousal states
  • The benefits of behaviour modification and cognitive restructuring
  • A therapeutic, attachment-based approach to managing anger
  • Understanding triggers and the role of anxiety
  • Remaining in role as a professional when managing anger
  • The skills and competencies required for working effectively with anger 
  • The relationship between control and anger
  • How to implement strategies and techniques for managing anger
  • How thoughts and feelings affect behaviour
  • The importance of remaining in role when supporting young people to manage their anger
  • Managing high arousal states and early intervention
Training methods utilised include: theoretical presentation with experiential methods ensuring that participants understand and appreciate the value of Anger Management through a range of learning modalities
